Intro:
In this short story, you will be experiencing a 10 year old farmer girl, Annie's life. In this story, she will be meeting a new friend named Bella. Annie and Bella will soon learn they had known each other for their whole life. This story's setting takes place in the early 1867.
Chapter 1:
I open my eyes from the sound of Rooster Col's sweet sound. I need to wake up. I step into my shoes and look at the sundial on the dry soil. 7:00! I had overslept! The pigs woke up earlier than me! They are looking under piles of leaves trying to see if there's any food to eat. The pigs are now looking up to me as if calling my name,"Anne! Anne! Do you have any food?" My parents have been sick for weeks and I am their only hope. I take off like a rocket into the shed where we store our food and supplies.
I come back and shove apples into the begging pigs' mouths. They ask for more but that's all they get for breakfast. Next, I go to my parents' room. This is the Morning Song. All of this. From the rooster, the sundial, the pigs, to my parents. All of it. The song continues as I change the wet cloth on parents' foreheads. They groan as I do this. They have had a fever for a couple weeks now and I am worried. The Morning Song fades away as the sun goes down. This is now the start of night's work. Since I didn't finish my morning work, I need to finish all of it at night. I am under lots of pressure but I know it's my fault for oversleeping.
I cut some wood and put the chunks into the fire. Next, I boil some water and put some rice in it. I am making some jook for my parents. You see, my grandparents are Korean and before they passed away, had made this for my parents. They had said jook was the best doctor for someone with fever. All it is "rice soup". Because it is soup, it is easy to eat...even for the sick. I grab 3 bowls and give one to each of my parents and one for myself.
My parents take the jook and finish almost automatically while I take a while thinking about how these tired and worn-out parents used to be such jolly ones. As I think, I look up at the sky and see a shooting star. I pray that my parents will get better soon.
